Bye, Twitter. Hello, Bluesky!

…But not on Twitter. I would Tweet my blog posts or comment on other tech-related posts and I’d all I get were follows from bot accounts predominantly comprised of scantily-clad women with, more often than not, a link to an OnlyFans page or some sketchy promotion.

Social Media and Businesses

When you launch a new business, usually the urge to set up accounts across each and every social media platform is not uncommon. And why wouldn’t you? Typically it is free and perhaps you’ll build a massive following on one of them and really get your name out there!

When I started DaveTech I created a Facebook page, an Instagram account, and of course, a Twitter/X account as well. Each of these accounts was quickly up and running, posting, and getting some followers here and there. Real people too but mostly friends and family to start.

But not on Twitter. I would Tweet my blog posts or comment on other tech-related posts and I’d all I get were follows from bot accounts predominantly comprised of scantily-clad women with, more often than not, a link to an OnlyFans page or some sketchy promotion.

These were just  “people” very interested in my tech blog. There were about 50 more like this.

Leaving Twitter, The eXile

I even asked on a verified bluecheck account just a few weeks ago if I could embed their tweet in another blog post that I am currently working on, and got no reply. There is a pretty good chance they didn’t see my ask within their post or, maybe they didn’t care, or, maybe they didn’t want to. Regardless, I think most unpaid Twitter accounts’ comments are hidden from the verified users unless they happen to already follow each other.

I’ve felt the most successful engagements for unpaid users is with other unpaid users. Or bots.

Also with Musk’s banning of his critics, most recently Stephen King (link to his Bluesky;), it’s quite clear the billionaire has a warped take on free speech.

So with that, DaveTech’s newly created Twitter account is going to be deactivated this afternoon. I’ll be giving Bluesky a try, and while I can’t make any promises as to if it will be worthwhile or interesting or…anything. I’ll be giving it a try.

So, so long, Twitter/X.
